Similarities & Differences Although these two vary in many ways, there are many things that are comparable. Both involve animals on a farm that have human like mannerisms as well as intelligence. In both incidences, there is a father figure who leads the animals through honor and integrity, but fatefully dies and leaves responsibility to the animals that are left. In terms of Barnyard, this character would be old Ben, while in Animal Farm it would be Old Major. The farm is run by mostly animals in both stories, although in Barnyard the farmer is not removed, he is just considered an idiot and ignored. Animals must take responsibility of maintaining and protecting the farm in both stories. Each story also features an old donkey that acts like an oracle in giving advice. The donkeys live through many events and can see a more broad prospective of the events and their consequences in both pieces.
These stories differ more than they relate as one is a comedy movie while the other is a satirical novel. In barnyard, they do not kick out the farmer and take control of the farm as the farmer is not oppressive and they manage all the work in the first place. This story is more happy and involves more of the personal freedoms the animals have and the wacky things they do as a opposed to Animal Farm where the animals are given barely any freedom and forced to work under communists rules. Another huge difference is the animals that are considered the masterminds in each work. In Animal Farm the pigs are by far the smartest on the farm and take control after Old Major dies. These pigs have advanced understanding of human concepts and can think about the same as humans. On the other hand in Barnyard, all the animals are generally of equal intelligence(or stupidity). The pigs within Barnyard are on par with the other animals although it does seem like the cows are the natural born leaders of the farm. John Lennon |
